For days, rumours about Musk launching an AI startup have circulated, with Business Insider reporting that Musk had purchased thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs) to support an impending generative AI product. According to the Financial Times, Musk intends to launch an AI startup to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Musk allegedly requested financing from SpaceX and Tesla investors to get the venture off the ground.

When asked about all the GPUs he bought during an interview on Twitter Spaces, Musk made no mention of his aspirations to start an AI company, saying "it seems like everyone and their dog is buying GPUs at this point." The alleged X.AI name is consistent with the branding of the X Corp. name he has since allocated to Twitter, as well as the "X" label he has applied to his concept of a "everything app."

Musk has been vocal in his opposition to OpenAI, the AI organisation he co-founded in 2015 but left in 2018, and recently signed a letter calling for a halt to "giant AI experiments." OpenAI has become a household brand in recent months because to technologies such as ChatGPT and GPT-4, and it is partly responsible for kicking off Microsoft and Google's current push to embed AI capabilities more deeply into many of their products.
