How many prototypes of the Starship have been developed so far?

SpaceX's Starship, a colossal spacecraft aiming for Mars and beyond, has captivated space enthusiasts with its audacious design and rapid development cycle. But just how many prototypes have soared (or attempted to soar) into the skies so far? Buckle up, as we embark on a numerical journey through the ever-evolving landscape of Starship development.

From Starhopper to the Latest SN: A Chronology of Starship Prototypes

SpaceX's Starship journey began with the iconic Starhopper, a single-engine, suborbital test vehicle that first took flight in July 2019. It paved the way for a series of full-scale Starship prototypes, each designated by an "SN" followed by a number:

  • SN1, SN2, SN3: These early iterations focused on ground testing and static fire trials, laying the groundwork for future flights.
  • SN4, SN5, SN6: Taking to the skies, these prototypes conducted short hop flights, reaching altitudes of a few hundred meters.
  • SN8, SN9, SN10, SN11: Pushing the envelope further, these prototypes attempted high-altitude flights and belly flop maneuvers, with varying degrees of success (and fiery landings).
  • SN15: Marking a breakthrough, SN15 successfully completed a high-altitude flight and landed intact, becoming the first fully reusable Starship prototype.
  • SN20, SN21, SN22, SN24/B7, S25/B9: Continuing the rapid iteration, these prototypes focused on further testing and refining various aspects of the spacecraft and booster.

The Current Starship Landscape: Prototypes in the Pipeline

As of today, the Starship prototype count stands at an impressive 25, with several more under construction or in the planning stages. These future Starships, including SN26, SN27, and beyond, will continue to push the boundaries of technology and pave the way for the first orbital and eventually, interplanetary flights.

Beyond the Numbers: What Does the Prototype Count Tell Us?

The sheer number of Starship prototypes underscores SpaceX's aggressive development pace and commitment to rapid iteration. Each prototype serves as a learning experience, providing valuable data that informs the design and construction of the next. This iterative approach allows SpaceX to quickly identify and address challenges, leading to faster progress towards their ambitious Mars colonization goals.
