A commander in the war-torn nation has written to the world's richest man, Elon Musk, imploring him to act as Russia continues to attack the vital port city of Mariupol—home to the vast Azovstal steel mill where many Ukrainian troops remain trapped after weeks of resistance.

Serhiy Volyna, who said he created a Twitter account solely to reach out to Elon Musk, penned, "Others say you're from another planet and encourage people to believe in the impossible." Volyna is the 36th Separate Marine Brigade's commander.

"Our planets are adjacent, as I reside on a planet where survival is practically impossible. Assist us in leaving Azovstal for a neutral nation. Unless you, then who? "

He urged "every individual on Earth" to assist in ensuring Musk received his message.

Elon Musk, an ardent Twitter user who has just closed a $44 billion agreement to acquire the social media network, is always in the news for his eccentric tweets. Twitter reports that in recent times, especially since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, individuals are using the platform to get news and support.

Musk, who has more than 92 million followers, has already used Twitter to issue a "single fight" challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine.

Last month, in response to the Ukrainian request for internet access, the CEO of Tesla activated his Starlink satellite broadband service. In addition, he provided technology to help restore connectivity in regions impacted by Russian military attacks.

More than 1,000 Ukrainian servicemen, the bulk of whom were injured, reportedly remained in the Azovstal facility, hiding in the maze of Soviet-era bunkers and tunnels from the Russians who now occupy Mariupol.
