It's worth noting that Active Road Noise Reduction will be offered exclusively on Tesla's flagship vehicles, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV. This is because the feature is hardware-based, since Tesla installed Active Noise Canceling Microphones in the Model S and Model X's front seats as part of their interior makeovers. At the moment, such components are not included in the Model 3 sedan or Model Y crossover.
Having said that, early recordings released on YouTube by new Model S drivers indicate that Tesla's Active Road Noise Reduction is still relatively mild at the moment. For example, Michael Hopwood, a Tesla Model S Long Range driver, for example, demonstrated the feature while driving on a tough chip-sealed road. During his trip, the Model S owner noticed that he believed the interior was quieter with Active Road Noise Reduction turned on, though the effect appeared to be quite subtle.
Given that this is the feature's initial release, it is almost guaranteed that it will improve greatly in the near future. After all, Tesla is known for continuously improving the features of its vehicles via over-the-air software updates. Together with the noise-canceling microphones included in the new Model S and Model X interiors, Tesla's software enhancements have the potential to elevate the premium EV cabins to the highest standards in the industry.
