Tesla has announced a refit programme for older vehicles equipped with the "Full Self-Driving" package that includes Autopilot cameras.

Tesla began selling all of its vehicles in 2016 with the promise that they will include all of the technology necessary to attain complete self-driving capability through future software updates.

This promise aided Tesla in selling vehicles, however it proved to be false.

Tesla had to update its Autopilot hardware many times, including with a new computer included as a retrofit for owners of Autopilot 2.0 who purchased the Full Self-Driving package.

There have been whispers over the years that Tesla would require more than a computer upgrade to reach self-driving capability.

These rumours have intensified recently, as no Autopilot 2.0 users equipped with the new FSD computer have reported receiving the FSD Beta, despite attaining a 100/100 safety rating in the app, which Tesla requires to receive the new software.

Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, stated last month that Autopilot 2.0 vehicles will require camera updates, which those who acquired the FSD package will receive for free.

Tesla initiated its retrofit programme today, notifying eligible owners via an in-app message:

“As an owner with Full Self-Driving Capability and early production cameras (your VIN), you are eligible for complimentary Autopilot Camera Upgrade, Camera replacements are required to access a continuously expanding suite of Full Self-Driving Capability features.

To arrange your complimentary camera replacements, schedule a new appointment from the Service menu in your Tesla App, Select ‘Schedule Service’ > ‘Upgrades & Accessories’ > ‘Autopilot Camera’.”

Although the exact number of vehicles eligible for the refit is unknown, it is expected to place a load on Tesla's service staff in the coming weeks.

Tesla is rolling out the retrofit as it gradually expands access to its FSD Beta to more owners in the United States.
