Watch the Tesla Cybertruck's unbreakable glass, uh, break

When Elon Musk debuted the Cybertruck in late 2019, he displayed a prototype that featured flat panels throughout, from the vehicle's robust steel shell to its enormous glass components. The truck's windshield was an excellent illustration of this, as it was simply a large flat plate of thick glass meant to withstand whatever the road had to offer.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has subsequently hinted at a number of enhancements to the all-electric pickup truck. While Musk indicated that the final version of the Cybertruck will look very similar to the vehicle's contentious prototype, he did add that some components and functions of the pickup, such as the door handles and steering system, had been altered.

Surprisingly, a Tesla patent application submitted  hinted at a handful of further design changes coming to the all-electric pickup truck. According to the patent and its accompanying images, Tesla appears to be investigating the possibility of using new glass-forming techniques to produce an upgraded windshield design for the Cybertruck — one that is not as flat as the glass used in the pickup's prototype. Additionally, the patent said that Tesla is considering using glass for the Cybertruck's dashboard.

The business appears to have showcased this improved windscreen in a recent video. Tesla's official YouTube channel launched a video explaining the technology behind the company's glass panels. And, while the majority of the video appeared to focus on the glass components of the Model 3 and Model Y, a small part saw Tesla employees transporting a big piece of glass that is not currently utilised in any of the company's production vehicles.

The video's one-of-a-kind glass panel was enormous, easily larger than the glass components found in the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. And, while the glass appears to be adequate for the Tesla Semi, it includes a part for Autopilot cameras that differs significantly from the Class 8 truck's. Rather than that, the Autopilot camera section of the glass is remarkably similar to the one utilised in the Cybertruck prototype.

Tesla's decision to forego utilising a flat pane of glass for the Cybertruck's windshield has a number of advantages. In general, a non-flat panel of glass is more resistant to damage, as it does not cave in as easily when impacted by road debris or other things. Tesla's redesigned windscreen for the Cybertruck also appears remarkably similar to the prototype's glass panel, indicating that the vehicle's aesthetics should remain intact despite its new glass components.
