What happens when you combine a man capable of building electric automobiles with a man capable of building rockets in the same room? What happens when both of those gentlemen go by the name Elon Musk? You receive a flying electric automobile.

In yet another instance of Elon Musk defying physical rules, the maverick billionaire recently stated that the next Tesla Roadster will be capable of flying. When the majority assumed Musk was being his typical flippant self on Twitter, Musk assured them that he was being grave.

He added that the limited edition version of the next Tesla Roadster will contain a "SpaceX" option package that includes not one, but "ten rocket engines, flawlessly integrated into the car." Musk even disclosed that the option equipped with rocket thrusters will accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 1.1 seconds.

Naturally, this raised questions about the safety of such an endeavour. Musk was quick to reassure (as reassuring as Elon Musk can be on Twitter) in response to a question, responding, "Yes, with the SpaceX rocket propulsion option package."

It will be completely safe, but really intense. Probably not prudent for individuals who have a medical problem — similar to a high-speed roller coaster." Musk has suggested that one could "essentially speed to the human endurance limit."

As it turns out, a flying roller coaster. Musk also stated on Twitter that "This will be able to fly for a very small period of time." I've always joked at flying vehicles and now I'm building one," he added, emphasising how ironic it was. This is not the first time Musk has made such a promise; he teased us with the idea in 2019.

When Youtuber Marques Brownlee expressed surprise, Musk casually revealed that the roadster will be powered by a "SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra high pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the two back seats." As the majority of flying cars do.

The Roadster, which is scheduled to debut in 2022, is the spiritual successor to the car that launched the Tesla company. The original Roadster was one of the first mass-produced EVs, popularising the use of lithium-ion batteries and demonstrating, unsurprisingly, that EVs could be extremely fast.

In terms of outright acceleration, the forthcoming version would outperform the original Roadster and every other Tesla, even the upcoming tri-motor Model S (expected in the first week of June, 2021). With a price tag of Rs 2.6 crore (excluding of taxes), the SpaceX version would also outperform any Tesla in terms of affordability.
