December 4 - Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla said on Friday that the company's much-anticipated Cybertruck would include a high-end four-motor variant.


"Initial production will feature a four-motor configuration with independent, ultrafast response torque control for each wheel," Musk wrote in a tweet.


Musk described the electric pickup truck as a "insane technology bandwagon," adding that the Cybertruck would feature front and rear-wheel steer and could "not only turn like a tank – it can drive diagonally like a crab."


The vehicle would compete against GMC's Hummer EV, Ford's F-150 Lightning, and Rivian's R1T pickup trucks. Among those, the R1T is propelled by four independent motors that power all four wheels, while GMC's Hummer is capable of driving diagonally.

Musk stated that he would provide an update on the company's product roadmap during the company's next earnings call. Production of the first Cybertrucks is expected to begin next year and reach full scale in 2023.


The company has thus far escaped a major crisis caused by supply chain issues and a global semiconductor shortage, both of which have harmed traditional automakers.
