Celestial Spark: Comet Fragment Illuminates Night Sky Over Portugal and Spain

Sunday, May 19, 2024 | Chimniii Desk

On Saturday evening, skywatchers in Portugal and Spain were treated to a spectacular celestial display as a bright green fireball streaked across the night sky. The European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed the object to be a fragment of a comet, not a meteor, blazing a fiery trail at an estimated speed of 45 kilometers per second (28 miles per second).

☄️😍 ESA’s fireball camera in Cáceres, Spain, spotted this stunning meteor last night!

Our Planetary Defence Office are currently analysing the size and trajectory of the object to assess the chance that any material made it to the surface.

The dazzling event, captured on video by ESA's fireball camera near the Spanish-Portuguese border, ignited social media with footage showcasing the object's vibrant green and blue hues. Scientists believe the fragment disintegrated completely over the Atlantic Ocean, with minimal chance of any meteorite remnants reaching the ground.

The vibrant green color is likely due to the presence of magnesium burning up within the object. Magnesium is a common element found in certain types of meteorites, such as pallasites, which are known for their beautiful olive-green olivine crystals.

This celestial occurrence serves as a reminder of the constant bombardment of our planet by small space debris. While most objects burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere, the sight of a blazing green fireball over Portugal and Spain is a captivating display of the wonders lurking just beyond our atmosphere.
