In a statement released Friday, three Republican U.S. senators announced they had submitted legislation to exempt India from sanctions for purchasing a Russian S400 missile defence system. They cited the need of working with partners to stand up to China as their reasoning.

A 10-year exemption for member countries of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue - Australia, Japan, and India - from sanctions imposed by the Comprehensive Anti-Terrorism and Sanctions Act (CAATSA), a sweeping 2017 law intended to punish countries that did business with, among other things, Russia's military. The bill was introduced by Senators Ted Cruz, Todd Young, and Roger Marshall.

The bill contributed to the chorus of voices in Congress calling for the lifting of sanctions against India.

According to a letter sent to Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday, Republican Senator John Cornyn and Democratic Senator Mark Warner have asked for a waiver on the grounds of national security and expanded cooperation.
