According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, the sortie comprised 34 J-16 fighter jets and 12 H-6 bombers. Taiwan's air force scrambled the fighters and used its air defence system to monitor the Chinese warplanes' movements.

The People's Liberation Army began sending 38 warplanes into the area last Friday, on China's National Day, and 39 aircraft on Saturday, the largest in a single day since Taiwan began publishing flight records in September 2020. China added 16 planes to its fleet on Sunday.

The increased number of flights within Taiwan's air defence identification zone prompted a statement from US State Department spokesman Ned Price over the weekend, warning that China's military action near Taiwan risks miscalculation and jeopardises regional peace and security.

"We call on Beijing to immediately halt its military, diplomatic, economic, and coercive pressure and coercion on Taiwan," the statement stated.
