Elon Musk asked his Twitter followers in December of last year whether he should step aside as the CEO of the tech company he founded. He pledged to uphold the informal poll's findings, and 57% of the roughly 10 million respondents chose "yes." Musk kept his word and appointed Linda Yaccarino, the previous head of global advertising at NBCUniversal, as the new CEO of the business five months later.

Yaccarino received harsh criticism from several Twitter users who pointed out her affiliations with right-wing radicals and Donald Trump. Yaccarino was chosen to serve on Donald Trump's President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in 2018. According to reports, she also adheres to a number of accounts that share right-wing extremist viewpoints, such as the anti-LGBTQ account Libs of TikTok, conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec, and former Trump attorney Lin Wood, who has ties to the QAnon movement and has promoted the untrue notion that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

On the other side, Yaccarino's executive chairmanship of the World Economic Forum (WEF), which has been the focus of numerous right-wing conspiracy theories, as well as her prior work with the Biden administration on a Covid-19 vaccine campaign, disturbed some conservatives.
Yaccarino's hiring by Musk appears to be an effort on his part to establish himself as politically centrist, appealing to neither the left nor the right. However, given the controversy surrounding hate speech and misinformation on the platform in the past, it is unclear how the change will affect Twitter's user base.

Even though Musk promised that users would be able to engage with him and Yaccarino in a future Twitter Spaces session, it appears that many people on both sides of the political aisle are still unhappy with the choice.
