Monday, October 10, 2022 | Chimniii Desk
In a recent interview, Musk shared some of his thoughts on a potential peace plan between China and Taiwan, as well as suggesting a controversial way for the Russia-Ukraine War to end. The plan was opposed by both the Chinese and Taiwanese governments. About half of the company's global output last year came from its China operations, which include the Gigafactory Shanghai. In September, the company sold a record 83,125 vehicles, up 8% from the previous month. As per data from the China Passenger Car Association, 44% year over year.

THE RECOMMENDATION

During an interview with the Financial Times, Musk was asked about his thoughts on China and the risk to Gigafactory Shanghai amidst the tensions surrounding Beijing and Taiwan

According to the publication, Musk said that his companies would not be the only ones affected by the conflict in Taiwan. Musk proposed a solution for the conflict. A special administrative zone for Taiwan is probably not going to make everyone happy. It is possible that they could have an arrangement that is less strict than Hong Kong.

CHINA’S PRAISE

Musk’s recommendation won praise in Beijing, with China’s ambassador to the US, Qin Gang, thanking the CEO for his remarks

Musk's proposal was the best approach to realizing national reunification. I would like to thank Musk for his call for peace across the Taiwan Strait and for his idea about establishing a special administrative zone for Taiwan. The best approach to realizing national reunification is Peaceful reunification and One Country, Two Systems. Taiwan will enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region after reunification if China's sovereignty, security and development interests are guaranteed. Both sides of the Taiwan Strait will share the glory of national rejuvenation, and the rights and interests of the people in Taiwan will be fully protected. Peaceful reunification of China is good for peace and development in the Asia-Pacific and the world, according to the ambassador.

TAIWAN’S CRITICISM

In as much as Musk’s comments were appreciated by China, they were widely criticized in Taiwan

Musk suggested that they actually united Taiwan's political environment. Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's defacto ambassador to the US, said that Taiwan's freedom and democracy are not for sale. She said that any lasting proposal for our future must be determined peacefully, free from coercion, and respectful of the democratic wishes of the people of Taiwan. Ma Ying-jeou was the president of Taiwan. One country two systems is what Elon Musk thinks. The former president said he couldn't accept it. The opposing candidates in the upcoming Taipei mayoral race all rejected Musk's ideas. The CEO's comments were belittling and could affect our national security according to Chen. He called on Musk to do better. Through his companies, Elon Musk has brought about revolutionary change. He said that he was calling on the man to hold himself to the same democratic values. The opponent of Chen accused Musk of being hungry for the Chinese market. He said that Musk is trading with the devil because of his business with China.

THE CONFLICT

The tensions between China and Taiwan stem largely from the former’s claims that the latter is a province

Taiwan has maintained that it is an independent nation. China could annex Taiwan by force if it wanted to unify it with the mainland. A growing majority of Taiwanese citizens reject the idea of being unified with China, with some even supporting the idea of independence.
