Billionaire Elon Musk is the founder of several revolutionary companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, and The Boring Company, and is widely recognized as one of the most influential people in the world.

However, despite his incredible achievements, there have been persistent rumours that his success was due to his family's wealth, particularly his father Errol Musk's alleged ownership of an emerald mine in South Africa. Musk recently took to Twitter to refute these claims and shed light on his humble beginnings.

Musk's tweets indicated that his family was not wealthy and that he did not have a joyful childhood. His family was migrating from lower to upper middle class when he was growing up, but his father's business had been struggling and he had been bankrupt for approximately 25 years. Musk also stated unequivocally that he had neither inherited anything from anyone nor been given a sizable sum of money. He went on to say that his father had not given him any real financial assistance beyond high school.

“I grew up in a lower, transitioning to upper, middle income situation, but did not have a happy childhood. Haven’t inherited anything ever from anyone, nor has anyone given me a large financial gift. My father created a small electrical/mechanical engineering company that was successful for 20 to 30 years, but it fell on hard times. He has been essentially bankrupt for about 25 years, requiring financial support from my brother and me,” he tweeted.

Regarding his father's alleged ownership of an emerald mine, Musk denied its existence, stating that there was no objective evidence to support the claim. He said that his father had told him that he owned a share in a mine in Zambia, but nobody had ever seen the mine, and there were no records of its existence. “If this mine was real, he would not require financial support from my brother and me,” he tweeted.

Musk even stated, "I will pay a million Dogecoin for proof of this mine's existence!" when asked for a payment for the information.
Additionally, he tweeted: "I'd love to see a photo of this mine. like, precisely where is it?

Maye Musk, his mother, tweeted: "Me too! And why did we sleep on the floor and in studio apartments?

This is not the first time that Elon Musk has addressed his father-related rumours. He had said about his father in a 2017 Rolling Stone interview: "He was such a nasty human being. You are clueless. My father will have a well-thought-out nasty scheme. He'll make terrible plans.

Musk recounted in the interview that his father did not wish him well when he immigrated to Canada at the age of 17. He asserted vehemently that I would return in three months, that I would never succeed, and that I would never achieve anything. He frequently referred to me as an idiot. By the way, that's just the top of the iceberg.

I strongly support the community notes and all this work but this time I don't understand it!

Even having a wealthy family, a student can have a lot of financial difficulties. On the other hand, the cited source is not reliable at all. https://t.co/Emec9MwErV

Many people continue to think that Musk's success is a result of his family's money, despite his protestations. Some have cited his father's entrepreneurial background and his family's ties to South Africa as proof of their wealth. Musk's own statements and behaviour, however, imply otherwise. He has emphasised the value of effort, tenacity, and creativity numerous times when discussing how to succeed. In addition, he has been candid about his own setbacks and failings, such as SpaceX's almost disastrous collapse and his issues with depression.
