Tesla is without a doubt the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles. The US EV behemoth practically pioneered the global electric vehicle revolution. While other new EV market leaders are emerging globally, Tesla is unconcerned about their rise.

Rather than that, the electric vehicle manufacturer views traditional automakers that continue to sell ICE vehicles as competitors, according to Martin Viecha, the company's Head of Investor Relations.

Viecha indicated on Twitter that over 90% of vehicles produced in 2021 will be conventional ICE-powered vehicles, which is Tesla's primary issue. Clearly, the automaker believes that increased electric competition is preferable to the ICE vehicles currently on the road. According to Viecha, ICE vehicles mitigate the beneficial effects of all competitive EVs.

Surprisingly, Viecha's statement echoes Tesla CEO Elon Musk's. Previously, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed numerous times his desire that his company will serve as a catalyst for the rest of the industry to switch to electric vehicles. Additionally, he stated that more companies producing EVs means more choices for consumers, which is a good thing.

Interestingly, Lucid Motors CEO Peter Rawlinson, who is also a former Tesla employee, holds a similar attitude. He frequently stated that the Lucid Air will compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and similar ICE luxury cars, but not with the Tesla Model S.

It is clear that premium electric car manufacturers are targeting their internal combustion engine-powered vehicle manufacturing competitors, but not other EV manufacturers. In summary, EV manufacturers are vying for market share with non-EV manufacturers, not with other electric car manufacturers.
