According to the auto-tech website Electrek, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released its December sales figures this week, revealing that Tesla sold 70,847 vehicles made in China – a new record.

The vast majority were sold in China, with only 245 units exported.

Gigafactory Shanghai has become Tesla's export hub, and the automaker produced vehicles for international markets, particularly Europe and Asia, early in the quarter – in this case, October and November – before shifting its focus to the Chinese market later in the quarter.

The additional 70,847 vehicles bring Tesla's total production to 473,078 vehicles imported from or sold in China in 2021, the report stated.

According to the report, that represents roughly half of Tesla's 936,000 electric vehicles delivered last year.

Around 160,000 of those 473,000 vehicles were exported.
