The Class 8 semi-truck is powered by an all-electric battery. Two concept vehicles were unveiled. It was planned to begin production as early as 2019. The production began in October and the first deliveries were made in December. The company initially announced that the truck would have a range of 500 miles on a full charge and, with its new batteries, would be able to run for 400 miles after an 80% charge in 30 minutes.

Musk said that the Semi would come standard with the autopilot feature. The 500 mile loaded range previously stated by the company was achieved by the production trucks in 2022, even though several trucking industry experts questioned the company's ability to achieve such a long range with an electric Class 8 heavy duty truck. The Semi was mentioned in the Master Plan. At the time, they said that they have a prototype that uses a bunch of the Model 3 electric motors. In April of 2017, Guillen was leading the program.

After leaving the Semi program a year later to lead one of the Model 3 general assembly lines, Guillen became the president of automotive at the company. The new lead for the Semi program had not been made public. A concept prototype of the Semi was unveiled at a press conference. He claimed that the electric Semi would cost 20 /mi (12 /km) less to operate than a diesel truck if charged at a Megacharger. The operating cost benefit may be eliminated if the Semi is not charged at a Megacharger. The price of regular production versions for the 300-mile (480 km) and 500-mile (800 km) range versions was projected by the company in November of last year. The founder's series semi would be US$200,000.

If you order now, you will get the truck in 2 years, according to Musk. The truck will not break down for a million miles, according to Musk. The slide stated that the train would last 1 million miles. It was explained by Musk that if a few should break, it should still run on down to only two motor. It would be impossible to jackknife due to the 4 independent motors adjusting to conditions, claimed Musk. Semi prototypes were being tested with real cargo, hauling battery packs from Nevada to California. In August of last year, a prototype of a Tesla Semi traveled from California alone, without escort or accompanying vehicles, for a week to arrive at the J. B. Arkansas has the Hunt headquarters. A toy version of the Semi was released in January 2020 as part of the Matchbox Convoys line.

The second version had a trailer with pipes and a forklift. In November of 2022, Musk reported that a Semi had completed a 500mi drive while weighing 81,000 lbs and would be delivered on December 1st. The first deliveries to customers were made on December 1, 2022.
