Tesla Inc is recalling over 475,000 of its Model 3 and Model S electric vehicles to resolve rearview camera and trunk faults that enhance the risk of a crash, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been in contact with the manufacturer regarding another camera issue while conducting an investigation into the company's driver assistant system.

The recall covers model years 2014 to 2021, and the total number of recalled vehicles is nearly equal to the half-a-million vehicles supplied by Tesla last year.

China's market regulator announced Friday that around 200,000 Tesla automobiles will be recalled.

The electric car manufacturer in the United States is recalling 356,309 Model 3 vehicles from 2017 through 2020 for rearview camera concerns and 119,009 Model S vehicles for front hood issues, the federal regulator said.

For Model 3 sedans, the NHTSA stated that "the rearview camera wire harness may be broken during trunk lid opening and closing, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying."

Tesla found 2,301 warranty claims and 601 field reports for affected vehicles in the United States.

For Model S vehicles, latch issues might result in the front trunk opening "without warning and obstructing the driver's view, increasing the risk of a crash," Tesla stated.

Tesla told the NHTSA that it was unaware of any collisions, injuries, or deaths caused by the concerns cited in the Model 3 and Model S recalls.

Tesla shares dipped as much as 3% in the morning before recovering slightly and closing marginally higher at $1,088.76. As early as Saturday, the world's most valuable manufacturer is likely to disclose record quarterly vehicle deliveries.

Tesla is recalling over 200,000 vehicles in China, including 19,697 imported model S, 35,836 imported model 3, and 144,208 China-made model 3.

Tesla is recalling these electric vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2020 owing to potential security threats such as the trunk lid suddenly opening during movement, according to a notice on the State Administration for Market Regulation's website.
