EV arms race: Tesla breaks another delivery record despite supply chain hurdles

Tesla announced its Q1 2022 data over the weekend, indicating that it experienced a record-breaking quarter by delivering 310,048 electric vehicles. Despite supply chain difficulties, COVID shutdowns, and other factors, it nevertheless achieved record numbers.

While Tesla manufactured slightly fewer vehicles than in Q4 2021, it still had enough inventory to outperform previous quarters. However, analysts and Wall Street projected that Tesla would be able to ship roughly 317,000 vehicles, so while the firm exceeded its own record, it fell short of some predictions.

"Despite continued supply chain problems and manufacturing shutdowns," Tesla says, "we produced over 305,000 vehicles and delivered over 310,000 vehicles in the first quarter."

With over 295,000 deliveries, Tesla's latest Model Y and the slightly less expensive Model 3 accounted for the majority of the deliveries. In addition, the business built or shipped approximately 15,000 of its high-end Model S/X vehicles. All things considered, that's a fairly outstanding amount.

Tesla car deliveries surging despite industrywide chip shortage

Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, responded to a statement about the all-time sales statistic on Twitter, saying, "This was an incredibly challenging quarter due to supply chain interruptions and China's zero COVID policy." Musk then thanked the Tesla team and its major suppliers.

What makes Tesla's Q1 2022 stats even more astounding is the year-over-year growth and improvement. Tesla shipped 184,800 vehicles in the first quarter of 2021 and produced around 180,338 vehicles, a 69 percent increase from the previous quarter. Essentially, despite global issues, Tesla was able to ramp up manufacturing and achieve some lofty goals.

With the Gigafactories in Berlin, Texas, and Shanghai, we could see Tesla do even better in Q2, despite the fact that shortages remain a problem. But we'll have to wait and see. It's also worth mentioning that if you order a new Tesla today, it won't arrive until sometime in 2023, owing to the fact that most models are now sold out.

In any case, although Ford, Rivian, and GMC are trying to create electric trucks at a reasonable rate, they could all learn a thing or two from Tesla, which is now breaking production and delivery records. The arrival of the Tesla Cybertruck cannot come soon enough.
