People familiar with the matter were cited in the report. The minister of investment in Indonesia confirmed that the country is in contact with the company. There are four active automotive production plants: one in California, one in Texas, one in Germany and one in China. Canada and Mexico are leading the charge to get another Gigafactory built.

Several times, Indonesia has been discussed with the next Gigafactory. The president of Indonesia has been trying to get the company to build a factory in the country. A battery manufacturing plant and a vehicle production facility were included in his proposal last year. Indonesian government officials were in Texas last year to discuss raw material supply deals for nickel, a metal used in electric vehicle batteries. There is no specific market for the next Gigafactory.

Musk said he hoped to announce the location of the next production facility by the end of 2022, but with rumors that Mexico was heavily favored to be the chosen location, he never officially committed to the plans. Adding another Gigafactory in Asia would help supply vehicles to various markets, including Europe, asTesla has utilized the Shanghai Gigafactory as an export hub for over a year.
