Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, said in an email to Tesla executives seen by Reuters on Thursday that he has a "very awful feeling" about the economy and intends to reduce approximately 10% of the company's workers. The warning arrived two days after the world's wealthiest man instructed employees to either return to work or quit. According to Tesla's annual SEC filing, the company employed over 100,000 workers at the end of 2021. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment right away.

Musk said he had a "very awful feeling" about the economy in an email headlined "stop all recruiting worldwide."

Musk informed employees on Tuesday that they could either return to work or leave the company, a demand that has already been met with resistance in Germany, where the company has a new manufacturing.

In that email, Musk stated, "Everyone at Tesla is obligated to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office every week."

"We'll think you've resigned if you don't show up."

Musk also got into a Twitter dispute on Thursday with Scott Farquhar, an Australian software millionaire and co-founder of Atlassian Plc, who mocked the edict in a series of tweets, calling it "something out of the 1950s."

In response to a tweet by Farquhar encouraging Tesla staff to look for remote work positions, Musk tweeted: "recessions serve an important economic cleansing role."
