Rivian R1T Suspension System Is Similar to McLaren 720S: In-Depth Testing

Dan Edmunds used to tune suspensions for major automakers, and he has lots to share about the R1T's hydraulic roll control system

The Rivian R1T - an electric pickup truck meant for adventure – shares a suspension system with a few McLaren supercars, according to Car and Driver's Dan Edmunds. He claims that the hydraulic roll control system in the R1T is the same as in the McLaren MP4-12C and 720S.

Dan Edmunds is the Technical Editor for Car and Driver at the moment. The former suspension engineer, on the other hand, has tuned suspension systems for two big automakers in the past, so he knows his business.

Edmunds compares the R1suspension T's articulation to that of popular off-roaders like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, Ford F-150 Raptor, and Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in the video below.

Edmunds notes that he's a big fan of removing a vehicles' wheels and tires to take an in-depth look that the suspension system. In so doing exactly this with the R1T, he made some intriguing discoveries. Edmunds explains:

"The R1T rolls on a four-wheel independent suspension, which isn't the obvious choice for a pickup, let alone an off-road focused one that's obviously aimed at the Overlanding set."

He explains that ground clearance, suspension travel, and articulation are all important for off-road challenges, therefore this arrangement isn't normally employed for a pickup truck. Edmunds put the system through a suspension flex test to gain a better picture of its capabilities. He basically drove the electric pickup truck up a 20-degree ramp in order to "measure its Ramp Travel Index or RTI."

While the test gives Car and Driver a solid indication of the R1prospective T's capabilities, Edmunds says he'll need to spend more time driving the truck in challenging real-world circumstances to understand more about its off-road skills. The little film contains many more interesting facts that make it well worth seeing.

Car and Driver offered the following timestamps that correspond to the YouTube video above for those who wish to delve deeper into key topics:
