Elon Musk estimates the range reduction of the Cybertruck side mirrors at 5 percent and offers new drivers automatic adjustment.

According to Elon Musk, the reason Tesla decided to make the side mirrors of its future Cybertruck electric pickup simple to remove is because they diminish range at highway speeds by 5%. He continued that while mirrors won't be necessary for self-driving cars in the future, Tesla would still work to make them automatically customizable in its vehicles.

Elon Musk said that one fine day Tesla cars will be able to automatically set them for new drivers without human input, with the critical qualification that the future belongs to self-driving cars, which won't need side mirrors. So far, Tesla's electric vehicles' side mirrors have the ability to automatically fold, dim, or tilt as necessary. The folding capability may also be customised for different places.

However, a Tesla driver named James Stephenson questioned on Twitter whether "Teslas ever be able to autonomously adjust the side mirror settings based on 3D position of the driver's eyes plus comparing against the fleet's internal camera data and side mirror settings." Elon Musk, who is often active on the platform and once expressed interest in purchasing it, quickly intervened with a tweet stating that Tesla would certainly "add autoconfigure to side mirrors," even though this may soon be unnecessary as cars begin to drive themselves.

Tesla is planning to do away with side mirrors entirely as we wait for that bright future. For example, on its planned electric Cybertruck pickup, "side mirrors incur 5% range reduction at highway speed," he continued, defending Tesla's choice to include them in the sales package solely to comply with the country's present laws and regulations. Back in October, Musk made the comment, "They're required by law, but engineered to be easy to remove by owners," and it appears that this will be the direction Tesla will be taking with its future vehicles.
