Don't hold your breath if you're hoping Rivian will announce support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rivian claims that its unique software platform is "the best way" and that any upcoming changes will be aimed at enhancing the current Rivian software experience in an email to a customer.
Since announcing the R1S and R1T at the 2018 LA Auto Show, Rivian has stuck to this stance. The business is uninterested in Apple's or Google's infotainment offerings, much like Tesla. Customers who don't want to rely on Rivian's navigation system, Bluetooth audio, or mysterious vehicle software have an issue with that.
A Rivian representative responded to u/Sprint8469 with the following:
"We think the best strategy is to have an integrated platform that is tailored for our vehicles in order to deliver a genuinely great digital experience. Although we do not now enable Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity, keep an eye out for our newsletter and blog posts on Story for more information.
I am aware of the potential effects this change might have on your experience with audio management because I currently use Android Auto. I appreciate all of your feedback, which will also be shared with our partner teams."
Rivian hasn't officially stated why it won't support CarPlay or Android Auto. Some consumers think that data collecting is the issue, while others think Rivian would try to market add-on packages of third-party infotainment software.

To be fair, Rivian is correct when it comes to software optimization. Rivian can regulate the entire experience within its vehicles and provide increased reliability thanks to specially developed software. If Rivian is of the opinion that custom software is the way of the future for automobiles (which may be the case in a world with self-driving cars), then it is only gaining an advantage over rivals.
But if you're anything like me, you prefer Android Auto or CarPlay. It is disappointing that these software platforms might never be installed on Rivian (or Tesla) automobiles.
