So far, Rivian has delivered R1S SUVs to its employees only.

The company is finally prepared to introduce the R1S electric SUV this summer as Rivian is transitioning to its next phase of production as output has increased significantly in recent months.

The EV startup had only produced a few of the SUVs thus far, keeping them exclusively for its staff. Following the delivery of the first Rivian R1S to the company's CEO, RJ Scaringe, in December 2021, numerous more SUVs were sent to staff members, including Vidya Rajagopalan, Rivian's VP of Hardware Engineering, who received her R1S in May.

According to Automotive News, beginning in August or September, deliveries will start going to more impatient reservation holders. Rivian, which has more than 90,000 reservations for the R1T truck and R1S SUV combined—in addition to an initial order from Amazon for 100,000 vans—will reach a significant milestone when customer deliveries begin.

With the exception of the Tesla Model X, which has less off-road capability than the Rivian and is substantially more expensive, the Rivian R1S will have practically the whole market for three-row electric luxury SUVs to itself by 2022.

The R1S starts at $85,575, while the outdated Model X costs $125,940 with shipping. A dual-motor R1S with a lower starting price is anticipated to begin shipping by 2024.

The boxy R1S SUV from Rivian has seven seats, nearly 15 inches (381 millimetres) of ground clearance at its highest setting, and 835 horsepower in the current four-motor version. Additionally, the car has quick charging capabilities that, under ideal circumstances, can increase the range by up to 140 miles (225 kilometres) in 20 minutes, giving it an EPA-estimated range of 316 miles (508 kilometres).

With 4,401 vehicles produced at the conclusion of the second quarter of 2022, Rivian has produced 7,969 vehicles overall, which is its largest production output to date. In Q2 the company delivered 4,467 vehicles as opposed to just 1,227 in Q1.

Despite the fact that Rivian does not break down sales by model, Experian data published by Automotive News revealed 2,045 new R1T vehicle registrations in the US through the first five months of the year and zero for the R1S.

Rivian expects to produce 25,000 vehicles in 2022, split between the R1T, R1S, and commercial vans for Amazon. CEO RJ Scaringe claims that under ideal circumstances, the Normal, Illinois company can produce 150,000 vehicles annually without affecting supply.
